Our Story

Amos Wood makes wood available to live with.  Detailed design, fine material, precision knives, accurate cutting, and prompt timing all go into our work. We manufacture exterior siding, lovely and long lasting decking, wall and ceiling cover in any species of wood depending on the desired outcome, trim and mouldings to continue giving the feel that was intended with the design of the house, flooring to suit, stair parts that evoke grace and value, countertops made just so, and signature furnishings that are all unique.  We manufacture exterior siding, trim and architectural mouldings, inside flooring in hard and soft woods, wall and ceiling covering, mouldings and trim to finish out, stair treads and parts, custom countertops, and unique furniture.  All of this adding value and warmth that only wood can.

Owners Jeff and Obe Amos, father and son, took over what is now Amos Wood in 2008.  Jeff brings his experience of wood, since 1976, as one-of-a-kind furniture maker, house designer/builder, and commercial retail designer/builder.  He is also a much collected fine art photographer.  Much of being a photographer is about design ~ design of the image possible from the scene in front of the camera.  This design capability is part of what is available at Amos Wood. Obe was brought up in his father’s shop and ingested enough wood that it is in his bones.  Not only does he bring straight, square and sharp to the shop floor as production manager, but he too brings experience in house construction.  This means that what gets made can be used as it was intended.

Our shops near Mahone Bay are in two sections. On one side of the road is our showroom and moulding shop. We have 3850sft where we have a 5-head 9″ moulder, a 6-head 12″ moulder, profile grinder to produce custom knives, straight-line saw, glue clamp system, drum sander, shaper, chip and dust collections system, and assorted support tools.  This is where all the linear stock for walls, floors and trim is made in solid wood. We also make stock that goes next door as furniture stock. Kilns for finish drying green stock in the back. One person in sales, and two in production keep this side going.

On the other side of the road is wood storage and fabrication in 3200sft. Our prize over there is a 43” planer/sander/sander which takes our massive live edge rough planks, flattening and thicknessing. All the necessary tools, both power and hand, are here for fabrications, be it massive dining or board room tables, or reproduction doors. Two staff with Jeff’s assistance keep this side going.

With the experience of the success of the Blockhouse showroom, in April, 2014, we opened our Halifax showroom at 2445 Agricola St., where we have one full time staff for sales. This space shows home owners the possibilities as they go through their decision processes, whether new build or an addition or renovation. Designers and architects bring their clients in for a hands on appraisal of wood colours, textures, widths for this and that, and profiles for other considerations.
